‘Songs from a Corner ’ is ten years old this week.

My debut album is ten years old this week. Released in quieter world a fortnight before the twin towers came down. It was recorded by Ray Barron in Douglas in Cork and Ruairi O’ Flaherty in Killarney, Co. Kerry. ‘Songs from a Corner’ will always remind me of the Lobby Bar and the countless great gigs I had there. Firstly, opening for John Spillane and eventually headlining and filing the place in my own right, three nights in a row at one point… ahh.
It was the album that got me opening slots with Evan Dando, Lambchop, Thin Lizzy amongst others, as well as starting me out on the road, with my first trips to UK, France, Belgium and Holland.

It stars Karl Nesbitt, Emmet Christie, Aisling Fitzpatrick and Justin O’Mahony.

Physical copies are long since sold out but it is available to download and I would like to celebrate its birthday and offer it to you at the birthday price of $5. If you already have it, recommend it to a friend!

Chris Mills Tells It Like It Is: Niall Connolly And Big City Folk

Heavy Years: 2000-2010 (Ernest Jenning) is the latest release from Brooklyn-by-way-of-Chicago singer/songwriter Chris Mills. The 14-track retrospective compiles songs from his last four albums, along with two new tracks recorded with DJ Oktopus (Dalek). Mills is currently on the road supporting Heavy Years, and he will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

Mills: I’ve never been a big fan of “open mics.” Always thinking of myself as a “professional working musician,” even when I was actually just a pizza delivery guy who played music on the side, I thought that there was nothing to be gained by rubbing elbows with hobbyists. Or maybe these sorts of things were for novices who couldn’t get heard any other way. I toured after all! I had a label that was selling literally tens of my albums! In short, I was a judgmental asshole.

That all changed when I met Niall Connolly and was introduced to his Big City Folk movement. Niall is perhaps the hardest working musician I know and definitely one of my favorite songwriters. Often playing seven nights a week, he hosts a variety of open mics, rock shows and curated songwriter sessions for novices and pros alike. Like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Billy Bragg before him, Niall feels that music is a weapon for good that anyone can employ, and his open and supportive nature fosters an environment rooted in the best aspects of what music is about: community, equality and just plain good old times. So, thanks to Niall, the scales have fallen from my eyes. I play more. I write more. And I’ve re-learned something that I had forgotten: That there is value in the process and the attempt, that even the shakiest most unpolished voices can have something to say and that you can learn something from anyone as long as you’re willing to stop being so cynical, shut up and listen.

As a side note: Niall isn’t really just a folky. He’s actually a stunning wordsmith with an acute pop sensibility, as evidenced on his killer 2010 album, Brother, The Fight Is Fixed, and this year’s admittedly folk-ier Super Cool Fantastic. I highly recommend them both.

My friend Warren Malone gave me an early birthday present of a day’s recording at his friend Brandon Wilde’s studio. One blustery winter’s day at the end of the year, I took the Coney Island bound F train to Brighton Beach. I sat down. I played guitar and sang. Brandon moved the mics around a bit, pressed record and said several encouraging things. When the day was over we had way too many songs. I put the recordings in the back of my mind. I rang in the new year. I shoveled some snow. I took a lot of trains. I played a lot of gigs. A month or so later, I called up my friend Ryan Langlois. He and Warren came out and graciously sprinkled some of their talents on the original recordings. I put the songs in a box and left them to ferment for the rest of the winter. A couple of more months passed. I called back out to Brandon and I picked a selection of my favourites. Finally, for good measure, a sense of continuity, customer value or just to be odd, myself and Warren recorded a new slower version of ‘She Makes Me Want To Be Clean’ at his house. And then, I had an album.
