Chivalry is Dead- Ryan Morgan
I first met Ryan Morgan at the Wednesday Night Song Club in Ceol. he was in town visiting in the company of a friend of a friend of of a friend of mine.Ceol, is generally a filtered open mic. I am supposed to have heard everyone who plays. Or else they need to be invited by another regular performer. It helps distinguish the night from completely open mics. Ryan seemed the right level of...

40,000 Norwegians singing in the rain.
Today, in the pouring rain, in Oslo, 40,000 people gathered to sing ‘Barn av regnbuen’ and hold roses in defiance of the horrific acts of violence committed by Ander Behring Breivik last summer. During the week, Breivik had said that this song was used to brainwash children, objecting to its message of peace in an age of multiculturalism.
Two women started a campaign to reclaim the...

Thanks to everyone at Mono who made us feel so welcome last night. I loved the gig. Thanks also to The Irish Embassy and the Norwegian Irish Society who seemingly sent out an e-mail about the gig. Now, that’s international folk heroism.
Another fine article about Big City Folk and...
“Niall sings a range of finely crafted songs with intelligent lyrics that demand attention – whether for their sharp political comment, philosophical musings or their stories of relationships, won and lost. His voice is instantly recognisable, a real advantage in this world of copycat, almost karaoke performers, and his stage manner direct; self assured yet unassertive. He lets his songs...

My friend Warren Malone gave me an early birthday present of a day’s recording at his friend Brandon Wilde’s studio. One blustery winter’s day at the end of the year, I took the Coney Island bound F train to Brighton Beach. I sat down. I played guitar and sang. Brandon moved the mics around a...

I will be performing at American Folk Art Museum Today at 5.30pm. That’s Right folks, I am Art, I am in a museum, uhm, no, i am not American. Shh.

Community and Song -RIP Jack Hardy
RIP Jack Hardy
Jack Hardy, one of the finest songwriters and gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of performing with, passed away yesterday. He was a true friend to folk music and songwriters in the city. We were lucky enough to have him as a feature a number of times at Ceol. He was always, funny, gracious and kind and never left before the last note was sung. A huge inspiration and...

You have to hand it to John Creedon
Not only did he once again play me on Ireland’s national radio station, but he picked ‘Calling Out For Rain’, a definite middle of an album track, a song that I am very proud of, but ultimately never expected to hear on the radio. Add to that the following true story: A few months ago someone tried to break into the studio whilst he was on air, our hero interrupted the intruder...

I had two gigs scheduled for St. Stephen’s Day (dec 26th). The heavens had scheduled a blizzard to test my resolve. I truly have never seen anything like it. Both gigs were obviously quieter than usual but still a lot of fun. I salute those who showed...

Dublin airport is closed, it is open, it is closed. I’ve been anxiously watching the screen all day I’ve been trying to contact the the airline to find out if my flight is delayed. Strapped in and accelerating on the runway, the pilot made the unhappy announcement that the...
